(Adam had this saved as a draft. I thought it needed posted even though it has been a few weeks.)
I don't usually post on our blog but some situations require some comments. Just such a situation occurred last weekend. My dad and I made the trek from Bonners Ferry, ID to the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX to watch the BYU Cougars take on the Sooners of Oklahoma. My sisters-in-law also made the trip (who really aren't so bad once you get past the scowls that are constantly streaked across their faces) and we met up with them in the stadium. The show was impressive. The Stadium is huge and air conditioned, the big suspended screen is 7 stories high and stretches from the 30 yard line to the 30 yard line and best of all, the Cougars beat the Sooners in spectacular fashion.
I'm not sure I have ever been so happy (over worldly things of course). Now, I am a Sooner fan (as many know)
but I am first and foremost a Cougar.
The win was made even more impressive by the hostile atmosphere in which BYU had to play. Technically the game was in a neutral location, but there was nothing neutral about it. Of the 75,000 fans in attendance only 5,000 were wearing blue. The Cougars came out of their tunnel to about 10 cheerleaders and the humble cheers of an outnumbered crowd while the Boomer Schooner led the crimson team onto the field where they were greeted by an eruption of cheers.
All of that didn't matter though, because with 1:28 left on the game clock there were only 5,000 fans left in the huge stadium all expressing their immense joy as Max Hall took a knee three times to seal the fate of the mighty Sooners.
As much as I love the Sooners that victory was sweet, sweet, and sweet. However, the Sooner fans are to be commended. Several congratulated us on the win as we walked out of the stadium and there were no jeers or comments that even resembled poor sportsmanship. Even at Jack in the Box where we ate dinner afterwords my dad and I were congratulated twice on a great win. The next morning there was a note on our car (that was decorated to show BYU loyalties) that once again congratulated us on the win and stated what an "honor" it was to be fans in the same stadium with us.
Now I only have two wishes for the college football season. A national title for the Cougars and for Sam Bradford to come back from his injury and beat Texas.
