Adam and I recently had a wonderful Sunday. This was a Sunday I have been looking forward to for sometime, and no, not because it is probably the last Sunday before I get to move back to Idaho. Several weeks ago our Stake President announced to our ward we would have a special visitor to instruct us on missionary work, you know that thing we are all suppose to do but can't seem to work up the courage to actually do?
This special visitor was Elder L. Tom Perry of the Quorum of the 12 apostles. It was amazing!
Adam, Sadie, and I all arrived about 30 minutes early so we could find a seat. I was surprised it was not already packed. We took a seat on a side pew somewhere in the middle which is about where we normally sit.
He spoke to us about the priesthood and the priesthood keys. He encouraged us to share our testimonies of the restoration of Christ's church. I loved it. It was unbelievable to be so close to an apostle of the Lord. Usually Sadie makes at least one of us miss part of sacrament meeting as she gets a little fussy. This time she was the perfect baby and neither of us had to leave.
After the meeting a line formed to shake hands with Elder Perry. I was nervous to join the line because I was not sure he had time to meet everyone in the ward, but I just could not resist. Adam and I took Sadie and got in line. We walked up and shook hands, he of course commented on how cute our baby was and asked about "night duty" with our little one. I then (thank you Ruth) got the chance to brag about how she was sleeping through the night.
I usually get so nervous in those situations, but I think he just had such a sweet presence that made everyone comfortable. It was not like the time I got to see Elder Bednar on my mission and when I got up to shake hands with him I said "hola como anda?" Who knows why I would speak Spanish? I knew he didn't speak Spanish and for that matter, I wasn't any good at it.
Ok, back to Sunday I am so thankful to have had that opportunity to hear Elder Perry and his powerful testimony. I want to be better about sharing my testimony. I really do know we have a Heavenly Father who loves us. It's for that reason He gives us so much to help us get back to him like Prophets and Apostles, scriptures, temples and so much more. I know the Book of Mormon is the word of God and I just want everyone to read it and find out for themselves.
Just let me know if you need a copy!
This is Adam. I though I would add a little to this special blog post. Of course Elder Perry was the highlight of the meeting, and rightfully so. He spoke of the restoration with an emphasis on the power of the priesthood. The apostle reminded us of the importance of the Church of Jesus Christ being, once again, placed on this earth along with the authority of God needed to run the church. Elder Perry then directed us to do missionary work because the message of the restoration and the power of the priesthood are too important to keep to ourselves. Everyone needs the blessings that accompany those two things.
It is important to note, though, that Elder Perry was accompanied by another general authority. Elder Sudagrow spoke about families and the wonderful role they play in this life and beyond. He exhorted us to take care of our families to the best of our abilities and urged us to show the love to our children that they need.
It was a pleasure to have such great men of God bear their testimonies about such important teachings of our Savior Jesus Christ. (We also met Elder Perry's wife and she was obviously a great and wonderful woman).
